A 17-year-old boy died after being struck by lightning near Sonoita on Wednesday afternoon.

Fernan Cortez Aguilar of Hidalgo, Mexico, was found by Border Patrol agents a half-mile west of the end of Windmill Drive after Cortez’s father, who was with him when he was struck, called 911.

At 2:52 p.m., Border Patrol notified the Sonoita-Elgin Fire District, which responded to what Battalion Chief Kevin Venos described as a remote location that was difficult to access.

“By the time we arrived they had already done everything they could do,” Venos said.

Border Patrol turned the investigation over to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

An intense storm blew into the area just before the boy was struck. “This kind of weather can be tragic,” Sheriff Antonio Estrada said.

Cortez and his father had been in the midst of an illegal entry into the United States when the boy was killed, Estrada said.

On Aug. 9, 2011, two undocumented border-crossers were struck by lightning near Parker Canyon Lake southeast of Sonoita. The men, ages 26 and 32, suffered burns but survived.

How awful must be the pain of the father to see his son struck by lightning and killed.
My heart goes out to him.

That he and his son may have been here "illegally" means nothing.
